What is PAT testing?

Portable appliance testing, better known as PAT testing, refers to the inspection of all electrical appliance and equipment on a given premises to ensure that they remain in a safe and fully working condition.

PAT testing is especially relevant for owners of commercial or industrial properties, since business owners are required by law to guarantee that the equipment at their employees’ disposal does not present a risk to their health or safety.

Although the law does not explicitly state that obtaining a PAT certificate is necessary, it is an excellent method of keeping all electrical appliances in good working order and ensuring you meet the requirements of the law and your insurance policy. That’s why it’s highly advisable to carry out PAT testing on a regular basis.

Leave it to the professionals

PAT testing can be carried out with the requisite knowledge and experience to do so.

While some appliances can be checked with a mere visual inspection, others will require a more thorough examination and test. For that reason, it’s a good idea to leave PAT testing up to the professionals.

PAT testing FAQs

Read answers to some of the questions we are most frequently asked about PAT testing.

What kinds of appliances fall under PAT testing?

All appliances which are fitted with an electrical plug or a spur box are considered portable appliances and are suitable for PAT testing. In an office environment, typical equipment which are subject to PAT testing include computers, vacuum cleaners, kettles, microwaves and printers.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

According to the law, all employers must ensure that the equipment and appliances under their care are safe to use at all times. While the wording of the law does not explicitly state how these must be maintained, PAT testing is a robust method of guaranteeing their safety and functionality. Failure to conduct regular PAT testing (and keep records of the same) could make a company vulnerable to lawsuits and penalties.

What are the most common issues that PAT testing detects?

There are a variety of different problems that can be identified by PAT testing, but the most common include fraying, cuts or abrasions on the appliance cable, crooked pins or cracked casing of the plug, stains or burns on the appliance and unsuitable working conditions in its environment (such as damp, dusty or otherwise dangerous climates).

How often should I conduct PAT testing?

The frequency of PAT testing that an appliance demands will depend on how often it is used, the amount of power it consumes and its service record. For example, a vacuum cleaner that is moved around an office on a daily basis and which has experienced issues in the past will require more regular testing than a stationary computer. For guidance on how often to conduct PAT testing on your equipment, feel free to get in touch with Prime Electrical.
