What is a consumer unit and why might it need upgrading?

A consumer unit, more commonly known as a fuse box, is a collection of miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) that control the flow of electricity to the appliances in your home or business.

These MCBs are responsible for cutting power to specific rooms or the entire premises in the event of an unforeseen accident or emergency. For example, if your circuitry receives an unexpected surge in power or your property suffers a flood or water leakage, your consumer unit would automatically prevent the risk of an electrical fire by switching off the power.

Advances in modern technology mean that many existing consumer units are no longer fit for purpose. As such, they should ideally be replaced by newer models which can enhance the functionality, efficiency and safety of your property in one fell swoop.

Expert upgrades from the professionals

It’s likely that you’ll become aware of an issue with your existing consumer unit after an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) has been carried out on your home or workplace

If the report finds that your fuse box poses a safety risk, you should look to have it upgraded at the earliest convenience.

This is particularly important for landlords and business owners, who have a legal responsibility to ensure that the electrical systems in their buildings are safe for tenants and staff members. If you find that your system requires a consumer unit upgrade, Prime Electrical are on hand to help.

  • All our electricians are Part P qualified and NAPIT approved
  • Consumer unit upgrades offered on residential, commercial and industrial properties
  • Local company providing exemplary customer service
  • Over 30 years of experience in the industry
  • 500 projects completed per year

Consumer unit upgrade FAQs

Read answers to some of the questions we are most frequently asked about consumer unit upgrades.

How can I tell if my unit needs upgraded?

An EICR is the easiest and most accurate way to tell if your fuse box needs upgraded. However, some other signposts include wooden or cast-iron elements in the unit, an absence of provision for residual current devices (RCDs) in your wiring or an overhaul of your property’s wider electrical system.

What are the benefits of upgrading my consumer unit?

First and foremost, upgrading your consumer unit will enhance the safety and reduce the risk of fire or electrocution in your home or workplace. Secondly, it could help you to achieve compliance with your legal responsibilities, while it can also add to the market value of your property if you are looking to sell it.

How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost and how long will it take?

The exact price and timescale of upgrading a consumer unit will depend on the size of your property, the condition of the existing wiring system and any additional features you wish to incorporate into the new unit. The upgrade should not take more than a day or two for domestic addresses, though all power must remain off for the duration of the upgrade.

Is your work guaranteed?

As an experienced team of NAPIT approved and Part P qualified engineers, all consumer unit upgrades undertaken by Prime Electrical meet the highest industry standards. Our electricians all carry public liability and private indemnity insurance as well, while we will always address any issues with our work in the unlikely event it may arise after the fact – and that’s our guarantee.
