Choosing an Electrician
Electrical work is amongst the most dangerous jobs to undertake in the home. It is therefore important that you instruct an electrician that is able to work safely and to legally required standards.
When searching for an electrician near you, there’s a temptation to settle upon the first name you happen across online or in the directory. This type of strategy is risky, since the company’s position at the top of search engine results could be more related to their marketing budget than their performance on the job.
Of course, we’re not suggesting this is the case with all of the options on the table – and there are certainly local electricians who are the first name you happen across precisely because they excel at their craft. However, relying on the initial internet search you conduct is often a recipe for disaster, since you haven’t taken the time to weigh up the alternatives available to you.
In the worst-case scenario, this could leave you burdened with an electrician who is unqualified to carry out the task at hand. Lesser (but extremely common and incredibly infuriating) concerns include those who do not turn up on time, who can’t meet deadlines or who leave your home or office in a state of disrepair. What’s more, refusing to survey the field of possible candidates means that you cannot compare and contrast quotes, meaning you have no idea if the price you’re given is a fair one.
Indeed, this latter point is one of the biggest reasons why it makes sense to contact several companies at the same time, explaining your issue or project to them and soliciting a quote. Any electrical contractor worth their salt should be able to supply you with a free, impartial and no-obligation quote for their services, which will allow you to compare their pricing structure against their competitors and gain an insight into the value they offer.
With that in mind, we recommend speaking to no less than three electricians in your area before you make a decision on which one to go with. Doing so will stand you in good stead in finding one who has the expertise to deliver results – but won’t break the bank in the process.
